Hopi Silversmiths are renowned for their overlay style of silver work. The technique of overlay began in the late 1930's to the early 1940's. The jewelry is formed by cutting two pieces of silver the same shape. A design is cut into the top piece. The bottom piece is textured and oxidized, turning it black. The two pieces are then put together and polished.
