It is a sponge coral, also known as Apple Coral and it comes from the South China Sea, from an island off Vietnam. It is a fast growing coral, not an endangered species. The fishermen pull it up in their nets.
There are various grades of Apple Coral (just as in Freshwater Pearls or any other Gemstones) and these would be considered a grade A for natural color and even tone. Apple Coral can range from these muted Orange tones to a pale tone almost bone color with various shades in between. Often this material particularly the less saturated colors are dyed to obtain the Coral Red and these would be considered a lower grade strand. This muted orange Apple Coral has become a staple for Native American and Southwestern Bead Jewelry Designers for its close match to Red Orange Spiny Oyster Shell.
