Bears are an important part in Native American Indian culture as various symbols of strength, hard work, and even great love. Many tribes considered the "Great Spirit" to often take on the form of a bear. It would lead hunters on great chases and could die only to be reborn in the spring. Bears were mythical and "magical" creatures that existed.
The Native American Indian, as a whole, is constantly aware of its relationship with Mother Earth and her creatures. The spiritual goal of the Native American is to live in harmony with the universe. A lesson to be learned
Turquoise is the ultimate healing stone, providing solace for the spirit and well-being for the body. It is a protective stone and has been used since ancient times. Native Americans call Turquoise the 'Sky Stone' and believe it is both male and female gender. Blue turquoise being male as in 'Father Sky' and green turquoise being female as in 'Mother Earth'. Some properties of Turquoise are spiritual attunement, cleansing, healing, protection, valor, soothing, peace of mind, guidance through the unknown, romantic spontaneity.
Lapis lazuli has been mined in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years, and trade in the stone is ancient enough for lapis jewelry to have been found at Predynastic Egyptian sites (as archeologists have frequently stated, but lapis could also be found in, e.g. the Siwa Oasis in the Western Libyan desert), and Lapis beads at neolithic burials in Mehrgarh, the Caucasus, and even as far from Afghanistan as Mauritania.
Jet is a geological material and is considered to be a minor gemstone. Jet is not considered a true mineral, but rather a mineraloid as it has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure. Jet is a product of high pressure decomposition of wood from millions of years ago, commonly the wood of trees of the Araucariaceae family. Jet is found in two forms, hard and soft. Hard jet is the result of the carbon compression and salt water; soft jet is the result of the carbon compression and fresh water. Jet is easily polished and is used in manufacturing jewelry, according to the Whitby Museum, dating from 10,000 BC in parts of contemporary Germany. The oldest jet jewelry was found in Asturias, Spain, dating from 17,000 BC.
Mother of Pearl, Coral, and Spiny Oyster Shell have all been used in Southwest Native American jewelry for hundreds of years. Brought inland by the west coast indigenous people and used as a trade currency.
